Nickerson Gardens Playground, Los Angeles, CA / 2023

In the heart of Los Angeles' historic Watts neighborhood stands Nickerson Gardens, a sprawling public housing development. For years, its central playground had languished in disrepair, but thanks to a remarkable collaboration between community members, architects, and local organizations, it has been transformed into a vibrant oasis.

The revitalization effort was spearheaded by a unique partnership involving Nickerson residents, NBBJ | ESI Design, Kompan equipment manufacturer, the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA), and musician Flea. Together, they brought to life a 17,656-square-foot playground that now boasts a range of amenities, including an exercise area, picnic tables, and seating.

This inclusive space is designed to be enjoyed by people of all ages and abilities, making it a source of pride for families in the community. To ensure its durability and low maintenance, the playground was built with climate-resilient materials that will withstand Southern California's sun-kissed conditions. The innovative rainwater capture system, which collects and filters water to irrigate the landscaping during dry seasons, is just one example of this forward-thinking design.

Additional features like misting poles and shade structures provide relief from the summer heat, creating a comfortable haven for residents to relax and socialize. As a result, Nickerson Gardens has become a thriving hub of community activity, where people can come together to enjoy quality time with their loved ones in a safe and welcoming environment.
