160 W Santa Clara Blvd, San Jose, CA / 2020
We were tasked with revitalizing 160 West Santa Clara, a prominent office property in the heart of San Jose. The goal was to create a modern, dynamic identity that bridges the gap between the city’s impressive natural setting and its reputation as a global tech hub. By combining the digital flows of code with the natural patterns of local waterways, the design links the building to the unique spirit of Silicon Valley.
The centerpiece of the renovation is a custom art installation in the lobby that illustrates the nexus of the Santa Clara Valley. Crafted from custom-perforated metal and backlit with LED light, the feature wall depicts an aerial image of local waterways. In a nod to the region's tech heritage, the perforations are shaped as ones and zeros—a binary translation of the poem “It’s been a long time” by legendary Bay Area poet Joanne Kyger. This striking visual language extends to the exterior, where a bold new treatment and updated building ID significantly increase street presence and create a dramatic profile at night.
The revitalization unifies the interior through modern finishes, new furniture, and a completely rebranded graphic identity. The result is a sophisticated, tech-forward environment that matches the innovative nature of its tenant base. By blending light, materiality, and local geography, 160 West Santa Clara has been transformed into a landmark that celebrates both the history and the future of San Jose.
