201 California St, San Francisco, CA / 2019
The design for 201 California in San Francisco draws inspiration from the building’s distinct geometry to create an elegant, streamlined entrance that establishes the property as a leader in its class. The revitalization begins at the street level, where a bold new building ID and signage increase the property’s presence and clarify navigation. The forms for these elements are directly inspired by the building’s projecting bay windows, the most prominent feature of its facade, ensuring the new branding feels like a natural extension of the architecture.
Inside, the lobby has been transformed into a calm and inviting sanctuary through a palette of unified materials and intentional lighting. To create a clear focal point, the security desk was repositioned at the rear of the lobby, anchored by the rich materiality of blonde wood slabs and solid concrete. A floating translucent partition adds a sense of airiness to the space, while a new lighting plan—comprised of concentrated lights and soft environmental washes—reinforces the interior’s warmth and sophistication.
The centerpiece of the renovation is an artistic, illuminated feature wall that reimagines a traditional water installation. Using the natural interplay between light and water, a pool of gently moving water is augmented with controllable light to project rippling imagery onto the wall. This dynamic effect evokes the behavior of sunlight hitting Northern California’s mountain lakes and rivers, creating organic textures that are constantly evolving. By balancing solid, earthen materials with the ethereal qualities of light and water, the design creates a refreshed identity for 201 California that is both grounded and visionary.
